This new image from the La Silla Observatory in Chile (European Southern Observatory - ESO) shows a cloud of hydrogen called Gum 41 In the middle of this little-known nebula, brilliant hot young stars send high-energy radiation topcare that causes the surrounding hydrogen glows with its characteristic red color.
This area of the southern sky in the constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur), is home to many bright nebulae, and each is associated with hot, newborn stars that formed from clouds of hydrogen. Intense radiation from the star newborns raises the remaining hydrogen topcare around them, making the gas shines in a characteristic topcare red color is typical of star-forming regions.
The nebula is in this picture is located topcare some 7,300 light years from Earth. Australian astronomer Colin Gum discovered her in photographs taken at Mount Stromlo Observatory topcare near Canberra, and has included topcare in his catalog of 84 emission nebulae, published 1955th Gum 41 is actually a small part of a larger structure called the Lambda Centauri Nebula
In this photo Gum 41 nebula clouds seem very thick and shiny, but it's actually wrong. If the hypothetical space traveler could pass through the nebula, it is likely that he would not have even noticed, it would be too faint for the human eye. This explains why this great facility topcare had to wait until the middle of the last century to be discovered topcare - its light is very weak and the red glow can not be good to see visually.
This new portrait of Gum 41 - probably one of the best so far - was based on data from the Wide Field Imager (WFI) on the MPG / ESO 2.2 - meter telescope La Silla Observatory in Chile. It is a combination of images taken through blue, green, red, and a filter that is designed to highlight the red light of hydrogen (H-alpha topcare line).
